Make Emerson's icon repository more engaging for developers
Background
Problem Statement
How can we increase user engagement with our icons and enhance the searchability and download functionality?
Process
The project was created from scratch to public in 6 months
Research
By conducting survey, contextual inquiry, and interview, we conclude the most common user concerns while using the current icon repository
Discover User Pain Points
Ideate
Defined the essential elements of the icon repository and improve the user flow for the current icon repository
The UX project refined the icon download process from a multi-step sequence to a swift, one-step action. Users enter the system, filter, search for an icon, and instead of clicking through to OneDrive, they directly download the icon by hovering over it—cutting down the post-search steps from three to one and significantly streamlining the user experience.
Current Icon Repository Design
Home Page
Icon Page
New Design - Search Box (3 Iterations)
New Design - Icon and Download (3 Iterations)
Final UI Design
Implement
Built through Webflow: Visual builder that allows user to drag-and-drop elements to build complex designs
Use Javascript to accomplish search functionality
Icons repository stores on Sharepoint Design Center (Only Emerson Employee can download to prevent security issue)
I conduct interviews with five participants from Emerson, who are based in Austin, Manila, and Warsaw. The primary task assigned to these participants is to locate and download three icons from both the existing and newly modified design icon repositories
Insights
One user failed to locate the old icon repository on the webpage
2 out of 5 users preferred to have a built in form to request new icons
5 out of 5 users did not use the modern icon categories
For users who completed both tasks, there was a 29.5% reduction in completion time
2 out of 5 people did not have access to the old icon repository
Summary & Takeaway
Summary Over a six-month period, I developed an MVP for Emerson's design system. This project, from ideation to implementation, result a 30% improvement in task efficiency. Future plans include redesigin the icon request flow and deciding on the best hosting solution, enhancing user experience and accessibility. Working on this project has sharpened my skills in UX design and taught me the importance of being adaptable and persistent as I grow professionally. Takeaway This journey has also been one of personal and professional growth. My mentor's trust in my abilities empowered me to make critical decisions independently. There were moments of doubt, but by breaking down challenges and tackling them one by one, I discovered that there’s often more than one way to achieve a goal. This approach didn't just get me to the finish line two months early—it gave me valuable time to refine our product through usability testing. I've learned that adaptability and resilience are as important as technical skills in UX design.
